Good Society is a collaborative roleplaying game that seeks to capture the heart, and the countenance, of Jane Austen’s work.

It is a game of balls, estates, sly glances, and turns about the garden. At least on the surface.  Underneath this, just as in Austen’s own novels, it is a game of social ambition, family obligation and breathtaking, heart-stopping longing.

Play the type of characters that captured your imagination in Austen’s books 

Create your own regency character, from a wealthy heir who falls in love with the aloof new arrival, to a charming socialite bent on ruining the reputation of their rivals. Exploit your advantages, connections, and family influence to achieve your secret desire – all while jealously guarding your good name.

Not only that, players in Good Society hold the power to control the story itself, and change it in their favour. Take control of influential connections, create rumour and scandal, and spend tokens to orchestrate balls, carriage accidents, and even marriages.

Good Society will be a full colour hardcover book, packed with over 280 pages of thematic material and beautiful art.

Our aim is to create a beautiful book worthy of even Pemberley’s library. The game comes with more than 35 Secret Desire and Relationship cards to keep Good Society replayable and customisable. It also includes all the rules you need to create original desires and relationships of your own.

The Deck of Connections

In Good Society, supporting characters hold tremendous influence over the lives, situations, and hearts of the protagonists. Not only that, but players actually take on the role of such characters during the game, to inject more drama (and romance!) into the story.

To help you create vivid supporting characters quickly and easily, we’ve created the Deck of Connections. Each (double-sided) card contains two different intriguing regency characters, along with vital information such as their wealth, marital status, and less importantly, their personality.

Who will I be?

In Good Society, characters are created from four components.

Your Character Role

While a proper lady or gentleman has a great many characteristics, society reduces you to just one. Are you the heir, toying with suitors as you wait expectantly for your estate? Or a socialite, desperate to climb the ladder to the pinnacle of high society?

Your Family Background

More important than who you are in regency society, is of course who your family is. Are you the clergyman’s daughter? Or did your father marry well, into old money and a vast estate?

Your Secret Desire

Your heart burns with a hidden passion for the achievement of but one end. I would not dare to presume to guess what it may be.

Your Closest Relationship

We all are made what we are by our ties to others. Shall you find in another a loyal confident, or a bitter rival? Or could it be the former object of your affection, still jilted by your disloyalty?

Good Society is a collaborative tabletop roleplaying game, where you and your friends take on the role of regency characters, AND the forces that complicate their lives, to create a truly Austen story. One person takes on the role of the Facilitator, who helps the players to create the game’s fiction, and plays supporting characters as needed.

To create a game that plays like an Austen novel, we’ve created a completely original system, with game mechanics that mirror the actual mechanics of Austen’s world.

Reputation, family background, rumour and scandal, and of course, the writing of letters, are all important rules of the game. These mechanics are all geared towards narrative and collaborative play, allowing players to work together to shape the story they want to tell.

The game is quick to teach and easy to learn, whether or not you’ve played a roleplaying game before.

A game of Good Society consists of six sections

Collaboration: Decide what kind of story you would like to tell. Will this be a drama, or a light-hearted farce? Will you play with gender norms, or should you get rid of, or reverse them?

Backstory: Build the world of your Austen novel. Who are your family, rivals, and friends? Which cousin will inherent your estate if you fail to marry? Which eligible Captain has recently arrived in town? During the game, players will take on the roles of the minor characters that surround them, as well as their primary character.

Once you’ve completed Backstory and Collaboration, the following phases repeat to form the cycle of play:

Novel: In-character play. Pursue your secret objective, exploiting relationships, estates, and connections to make engagements, secure an inheritance, and disgrace enemies. All while keeping your reputation in check.

Reputation: Whose reputation will rise, and who will face ruin and scandal?

Rumour and Scandal: Players collaboratively determine what rumours and scandal are flying around the town. Which are merely gossip mongering and which will be confirmed?

Epistolary: An optional phase for the writing of letters. Very important.

The Expansions

As part of the Kickstarter campaign, backers unlocked and voted for a re-theme of Good Society. The winner was Pride, Prejudice and Practical Magics, inspired by fiction such as Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell, Shades of Milk and Honey, and Sorcery and Cecelia.

In it, characters will take on new roles, desires, and relationships as they struggle with prophecies, glamour and incantations, all while maintaining an impeccable reputation, and finding a suitable match.

This re-theme pays homage to works such as the Scarlet Pimpernel, Zorro, and Sovay.

The key focus of the theme is on double lives – with each character having their regular Good Society play materials and concerns, as well as additional play materials that represent their secret bad-ass persona.

Materials from Good Society and both re-themes are completely compatible, which means, if you want sword fighting AND magic AND advantageous marriages now you can!
