One of the best and most succinct panels we’ve presented was at Hubcon 2019. This was a practical talk about the process of creating an rpg. It does not delve into rpg theory, but rather, the talk revolves around the procedure of design, and tips and tricks to get productive at each step, rather than theoretical frameworks.
And to be frank, this is much closer to portraying what my daily approach to working as a game designer / self-publisher is truly like.
Reflecting on this almost half a year later, I am still very proud of it as an expression of our design process. Of course, this is not the only way that games are created, just our own experience. Still, it highlights the two things most important to us in making games: finding the heart of the thing, and iterating on the play experience as much as we can.
I hope that in sharing this, it could give you insight into your own design process, or help you get started designing if you’ve never done it before!
